Giving Voice Initiative Veterans Day: With Eagles on Their Buttons

Ages 8 and up.

For Veterans Day this year, join us as we give voice to the history of U.S. Colored Troops. The free event, held in-person and online, will include a panel discussion about the history of U.S. Colored Troops draft, combat experience, uniforms of the U.S. Colored Troops as well as an interview with historian Maya Davis who recalls her ancestors who served in the U.S. military.

Speakers Include:

Kate Brodt, Marietta House Museum’s Assistant Curator, will discuss the story of how three men enslaved by the Duval family at Marietta House were drafted into the Union Army in 1864 during the end of the Civil War.

Coby Treadway, Public Historian at Surratt House will discuss his research on Prince George’s County’s the United States Colored Troop veterans, and how the Civil War impacted their later lives.

Marvin-Alonzo Greer, Director of the Prince George’s County Mobile Museum, will dress in period clothing and discuss the USCT uniforms and the day-to-day life of the Black soldier in the 19th century.

There will also be an interview with Maya Davis, Director of Riversdale House Museum. She will share portions of her family history of Black veterans.
