FY 2022 Historic Property Grant Application Deadline: Friday, October 22, 2021

If you are planning to submit an application for the FY 2022 Historic Property Grant Program grant round, please ensure that your application is submitted via email to HistoricPreservation@ppd.mncppc.org by 11:59 p.m. (EST) on Friday, October 22, 2021. No new applications will be accepted after this deadline. 

African American History Online Map Application

Staff is currently in the process of updating the African American History online map application to highlight the contributions of African Americans to Prince George’s County’s history and culture. This application maps Prince George's County-designated historic sites where notable and everyday people worked, learned, worshiped, and lived. It also maps Prince George's County-designated historic sites of resistance to the subjugation that African American Prince Georgians endured under slavery and segregation. The application can be found here under the “African American History” tab.

Proposed National Register Historic Districts for Cheverly 

and the Moyaone Reserve

At its January 21, 2020 meeting, the Prince George’s County Historic Preservation Commission will review two proposed National Register Historic District Nominations. The nomination for the Cheverly Historic District was requested by the Town of Cheverly and partially funded by the Planning Department’s Planning Assistance to Municipalities and Communities (PAMC) program. The draft nomination was prepared by The Ottery Group, Inc.

A second nomination, the Moyaone Reserve National Register Historic District, was requested by the Moyaone Association, Inc., and partially funded by with Certified Local Government (CLG) funds from the National Park Service through the Maryland Historical Trust (MHT) and funds from the Prince George’s County Historic Preservations Commission’s Non-Capital Grant Program. The Moyaone Reserve nomination was prepared by Robinson & Associates, Inc.

Public comment is welcome at the HPC’s January 21, 2020 meeting. After concurrence from the County Executive, the nominations will be reviewed by the MHT Governor’s Consulting Committee and then forwarded to the National Park Service for listing later this year.

Non-Capital Grant Program

The Prince George's County Historic Preservation Commission’s Non-Capital Grant Program (Grant Program) provides grants to support projects that identify, preserve, promote, and protect the historic, cultural, and archeological resources of Prince George's County for the benefit of the public and to encourage the revitalization of communities. These grants are intended to help produce and disseminate information, stimulate public discussion about preservation, make technical expertise accessible, and encourage community partnerships. The Grant Program can be used to pay for the costs of professional services such as preservation and planning consultants, planning studies, design work, and education. 

African American Cultural Heritage Action Fund

The National Trust for Historic Preservation recently launched a new program to assist in sharing the history of African American activism and achievement. To find out more information about the Action Fund and how to apply for a grant ranging from $50,000 to $150,000 visit the website.

Tax Credits for Improvements to Historic Resources

As of December 21, 2017, the amortization period for the County’s historic property tax credit program has been extended from five years to ten years. CB-48-2017, proposed by Councilmember Deni Taveras and introduced by the full Council, was adopted by the Prince George’s County Council on October 24, 2017 and signed into law by County Executive Rushern L. Baker, III on November 3, 2017. This new provision allows owners of historic resources who participate in the County’s program, more time to realize the property tax-based refunds available for rehabilitation or restoration expenses approved by the Historic Preservation Commission.
