Mark Wade TrioFriday, September 23, 2022, 8 pmModern jazz composer and bassist Mark Wade is open to appreciating and co-creating great music. Like Keith Jarrett, Wynton Marsalis, and Esperanza Spaulding, he is not limited by genre. However, jazz is his main love. Throughout his career, Wade has played with jazz notables James Spaulding, Eddie Palmieri, Conrad Herwig, and Jimmy Heath. In 2022, he released his fourth album titled “True Stories” which is an amalgamation of his previous albums and improvisation of well-known tunes. Wade will be joined by his trio namesake which consists of renowned Tim Harrisson on piano and Scott Neumann on drums. You will not want to miss this! Quiet Life MotelFriday, October 21, 2022, 8 pmWith a nocturnal, funky, and cinematic sound, the music of Quiet Life Motel weaves together jazz harmonies, shimmering orchestral textures, and frolicsome grooves. The group is led by violinist and composer David Schulman, whose music has been called “mysterious and beautiful” by the The Washington Post. Schulman has written and recorded the theme music for NPR’s The Big Listen and BBC’s Americana. He has appeared frequently at the DC Jazz Festival and launched the ArtSounds series at the Hirshhorn Museum. Whether he utilizes an acoustic bass, percussion, or alto sax, Schulman loves to extend the shape and spirit of music in unexpected ways with original compositions. JoGo ProjectFriday, November 18, 2022, 8 pmFusing jazz harmonies and a driving go-go beat, this performance will get you moving. Founded by D.C. native and jazz saxophonist Elijah Balbed, this mainstay in the D.C. music community is dedicated to keeping go-go alive while exploring original songs and arrangements. The JoGo Project culminated from a life-changing experience of performing with the Godfather of go-go, Chuck Brown, in May 2011. Join the party and get moving! The Brilliance and Resilience of Tap Dancing Featuring Baakari WilderSaturday, November 5, 2022, 8 pmThis evening is certainly going to get your toes tapping, showcasing the world-renowned tap dancer Baakari Wilder, performing original tunes with some of the finest musicians in the DMV area. Wilder has been performing since the age of 12 at the Kennedy Center and at 16, became a member of Savion Glover’s tap group. He is known for starring in the Broadway musical Bring In Da Noise, Bring In Da Funk and has been performing around the world. His performance at Montpelier Arts Center will be an exciting display of percussive tap dancing as his group plays jazz and blues music. Renée Collins Georges: Songs of the SeasonSaturday, December 3, 2022, 8 pmRenée Georges brings a high quotient of glamor and vocal know-how to every performance. Georges is an L.A. native with an extraordinary career. After years touring with MC Hammer and Ray Charles, Georges has emerged as a headliner under her own name, gracing stages in the U.S. and abroad. Her DMV area band includes such popular players as Herman Burney and Nasar Abadey, along with her husband, DuPort Georges. The annual recital series of classical music is a juried competition open to all classical musicians in the United States. Recitals take place in the Main Gallery at Montpelier Arts Center. Classical recitals are free, but a $5 donation per person is appreciated.
Benjamin BurneyèSunday, October 23, 2022. 3 pmOriginally from Youngstown, Ohio, tenor Benjamin Burneyè has performed nationally and internationally from the Caribbean Islands to Estonia. He made his Kennedy Center debut performing in the opera Iphigenia by Wayne Shorter and Esperanza Spalding. He has impressed many with his tenor voice by performing in Madame Butterfly, The Enchanted Forest, as well as with Gilbert and Sullivan Opera Company’s Merrie England. Mathew MaisanoSunday, November 20, 2022, 3 pmMatthew Maisano performs a variety of repertoire ranging from opera to concert works, musical theater, the American Songbook, and pop. Known for his “sonorous baritone” by Broad Street Review and his “commanding stage presence” by the Miami Herald, he has performed up and down the East Coast. He most recently joined Three Oaks Opera as Melchior in Menotti’s Amahl and the Night Visitors under the direction of Opera Philadelphia’s Liz Braden. Maisano has also recently appeared as his drag persona, Balena Canto in A Light in the Dark: A Holiday Cabaret of classical and popular music at the historic Glen Foerd Mansion.
