Our Vision

• Marietta House Museum, in Prince George’s County, is a community-driven historic site committed to nurturing social justice advocacy through understanding current social inequities and their historical origins.

Guided Tours 

The one-hour guided tour includes the main house, outbuildings, and grounds. The tour focuses on the lives of the free and enslaved 19th-century families who sought independence and identity despite the slave codes, laws, and societal limitations. Visitors in small groups start their guided tour in the historical law office of U.S. Supreme Court Justice Gabriel Duvall, located just within a few yards of Marietta House. Visitors then experience the main house by visiting the private and behind-the-scenes workspaces of the enslaved in the basement kitchen, scullery, and servant stairs, and Duvall family bedrooms. Then visitors explore the formal dining room and parlor where stories of early Federal America build upon stories through the Civil War at Marietta.

Group Tours 
Groups as large as 30 persons may schedule guided tours of the Marietta House Museum. One-hour tours include the main house, outbuildings, and grounds. Please call (301) 464-5291.

Accessibility: Parking and bathrooms are ADA accessible. The Main house basement level and first floor are ADA accessible. The second floor of the main house is only accessible by stairs. The Law Office building has five stairs at the front porch to enter. Visitors with special needs are encouraged to call in advance of their visit, at (301) 464-5291.

 
Field Trip Packages

Each field trip package includes an interactive guided tour of the historic house, law office, and grounds giving voice to the enslaved community. Field trips are designed to complement Maryland school curriculums to fit into your lesson plans!

Our Nation’s Great Paradox: A look at how our founding documents protected slavery

In-class pre-visit and post-visit lessons are included.
Grades 6-8

Students will engage in an interactive guided tour learning about the free and enslaved people who lived and labored at Marietta, a tobacco plantation. The special focus of this field trip is on how the Bill of Rights and the U.S. Constitution protected slavery and shaped the lived experiences of multiple enslaved generations. Two activities specially designed for these grades are integrated into the 95-minute visit. In-class pre-visit and post-visit lessons are included.

From Enslavement to Freedom: Duckett Family found in Primary Sources

Grades 4-8

Students will learn about enslaved people at Marietta using the same primary sources our historians use today. These primary sources include the U.S. Census and newspapers from the 1800s. In groups, students will share what they have learned about the enslaved families that lived and labored at Marietta.
